Oral Health for Adolescents
Protect your teeth from cavities by brushing and flossing away plaque buildup. The bacteria in your mouth feed on what you eat and this can cause cavities. It is important to take care of your oral health now to prevent problems in the future as an adult.
If you do not take care of your oral health, you can be at risk for certain disease such as tooth decay or gum disease. These diseases can lead to other health issues if not taken care of. Below are some tips for taking care of your oral health.
Brush and Floss
Brush 2x a day for 2 minutes with a fluoride toothpaste and soft-bristled toothbrush. Don’t forget to floss in between teeth at least once a day to avoid bad breath.
Dental Check-ups
Visit the dentist once every 6 months for a healthy mouth. Your dentist can clean spots that brushing and flossing can’t reach.
Protect Your Teeth
Wear a mouth guard if you participate in sports to prevent serious injury and pain.
Need help paying for dental treatment?
If you do not have dental insurance, Medi-Cal covers dental benefits for teens, including braces.
Why should you avoid smoking and sugary drinks?
It is important to not smoke or vape, and limit sugary drinks. Using tobacco products can have long term effects on your teeth that can end up being expensive. Remember to ask your dentist any questions you might have about your mouth and teeth. The dentist will let you know if you need to return to fill a cavity. Your dentist also may refer you to an orthodontist if he or she thinks you may need braces or have other issues.
